According to a reportage According to Industriens Fond, 93 percent of Danish companies have already launched green initiatives. But only 20 percent have an actual strategy for how ESG should be implemented in practice.

Many initiatives therefore end up as small, isolated projects that do not connect or support a common goal. At the same time, we find that good intentions are often not translated into action and that the potential of ESG work is therefore lost.

At SustainX, we work with four basic steps that we believe are essential for an ESG strategy to gain direction, translate into action and create real value for both the company and society.

1) Insights: Create a solid foundation

You've probably heard the expression “garbage in, garbage out”. This also applies to ESG strategies.

If the real situation of the company is not taken as a basis, even good green ambitions can quickly lose momentum. The first step towards an impactful ESG strategy is to create a solid foundation based on insights.

When we work with insights, it's about creating a clear picture of where the company stands and where the biggest opportunities and risks lie.

It requires a thorough and multi-faceted analysis of the business. The focus is twofold and the analysis deals with one inside-out and a outside-in perspective to uncover the interaction between the company and society.

Between the business model, governance structure and operations on the one hand, and the market, suppliers and other external focus areas.

In this way, we ensure that the foundation reflects the unique context of the company and that we can point to where ESG can create value and differentiate the company in the market.

2) Strategy definition: Set the right direction

When we have the right insights, we can define a clear strategic direction that takes into account both your core business, customer requirements and the opportunities inherent in market development. A strategy creates value only when it is rooted in the organization and when everyone can see the meaning of it. Therefore, we facilitate dialogue and ensure alignment across so that the strategy does not end up as another document in the drawer.

We help define the main areas of focus, ambitions and objectives. We make it a priority so that you use your energy where it has the greatest impact. And we work to create a strategic narrative that makes the direction understandable and meaningful for both employees, management, customers and other stakeholders.

3. Implementation plan: Making the strategy a reality

A strategy without action is just a piece of paper. Therefore, we translate the direction into a concrete plan with initiatives, milestones, responsibilities and tools. We make sure that the plan can be executed with your existing setup, so you don't feel that it takes entirely new resources to get started.

An implementation plan creates peace and clarity. Everyone knows what's going to happen, when it's going to happen and who's in charge. It gives you momentum and ensures that things don't grind to a halt.

4. Operationalization: Make it happen in everyday life

The biggest challenge for many companies is to make the strategy live in everyday life. We often see plans get stranded because key people do not have the necessary skills or because there is a lack of clear next steps.

Here we offer hands-on support, training and advice. We work with you to make things happen, and we help adjust along the way. Because an ESG strategy is not static. It needs to be developed in line with the market, customers and your business.

Conclusion

A strong ESG strategy creates both direction, ownership and business value. But it requires that it be based on solid insights, have a clear direction, be translated into a realistic plan and be allowed to live in practice. At SustainX, we guide you every step of the way — from initial insights to day-to-day execution — so that ESG is not just a one-off initiative, but a joint effort that strengthens your competitiveness.

Summary

  • 93% of Danish companies have already implemented stand-alone green initiatives, while only 20% have a clear strategy for how ESG should be implemented in practice.
  • A strong ESG strategy creates direction, commitment and business value. But it can only do so if it is built on solid insights, has a clear direction, a realistic plan and is made operational in practice.
